Does yoga cause high blood pressure? |
I am 35 male normal BMI, started yoga about 6 months back. My blood pressure has shot up, is there a connection between Yoga and high blood pressure? Actually, many people do yoga to LOWER their blood pressure. I would look for a cause outside your yoga practice, unless you have a real hard time letting go of competition and your yoga practice is frustrating you to no end. It is hard to imagine someone THAT competitive, though. Keep in mind that while your blood pressure is high you should stay away from inversions such as shoulder stand, head stand, hand stand etc. Gentler inversions like legs-up-the-wall are usually ok and will actually help your body regulate your blood pressure. I don't know what kind of yoga you do (male, 35, normal bmi, probably a physically demanding form such as power, bikram or ashtanga?), but it may be a good idea to focus on the stress relief side of yoga for a while and do some restorative and/or gentle classes. And really learn to focus on your breath. Make sure you let your teacher know you have high blood pressure! Source(s): I am a yoga teacher no connection at all. no not at all!! of coarse not |
