When you suffer from high blood pressure should you refrain from drinking beer? |
I suffer from high blood pressure and my wife thinks i should stop drinking beer, i drink about 18 cans per week. Alcohol contibutes to high blood pressure. Take it from a person that was on daily meds for 5 yrs and now off of them at 45 yrs old.....quite alcohol consumption Anything in moderation is OK. Beer won't necessarily increase your blood pressure, but if you feel the need for alcohol, drink a glass of red wine a day, and it will help to reduce it. Your GP will know what's best for you, especially if your on tablets for high blood pressure like me. Stop dont drink especially if you have high blood pressure you might end up getting diabetes and might also die from that believe me my uncle is going through the same thing he ended up in the hospital listen to your wife =) Yes. That is quite a lot, even if they are spread out. Substitute some cans for some exercise. It will make the cans you do drink so much sweeter. You know the answer to this - you just don't want to hear it! Drinking a beer, is ok............18 cans a week is not. If I have even 1 small brandy after a special meal out, my blood pressure soars.....don't do it. My dad had really high blood pressure. He used to drink about 4 cans per night (large UK style cans) with no effect on his blood pressure. He had to avoid salt and stress. This routine kept him going from 1976 until recently. A couple of years ago he had a bit of an experience which led him to giving up the booze. Although this was not specific medical advice for his blood pressure, he has never looked better. You are drinking quite a bit. It is likely that in general you would be healthier and possibly happier if you cut it down. If it is your pleasure, try drinking less, but when you do, drink the really good stuff! A 440ml can of 5.3% lager is 1.75 units of alcohol. ( lager cans can be up to 9.3% which is over 4 units!) 1.75 x 18 = 31.5 units Assuming you are being absolutely accurate and truthful, your beer is no more than 5.3% alcohol, and you NEVER drink any other form of alcohol, you are already drinking 1/3 more than in safe for anyone, with or without hypertension! |
