How does hypnosis work? How do people become hypnotized?

when someone is shocked because something happens that they are not expecting, there is a two second period right after the shock where you can give command to the sub-concious mind. The mind will take the first command it hears, which would be "sleep" if you're trying to hypnotise someone. For example, if I tell you to press down on my hand as hard as you can then suddenly I pull my hand away form under yours, you will be in shock, you did not expect me to pull my hand away, and even if you knew i was pulling my hand away, you wouldn't have expected when. Anyway, I have about two seconds to give you a command because you are suprised and your sub-concious mind is now open to suggestions because it did not know what to do after I pulled my hand away, thats when i say "sleep!" and you immediatley obey my command. Now unless I deepen your trance by following it up immediatley with something like " With every word I say you become more and more relaxed." then you will wake up. After this I can make you do whatever I want and if i want to wake you back up I'll say "on the count of three you'll awaken alert and ready to go. Not a moment sooner, not a moment later. 1....2....3!" Then they wake up with no memory of ever being hypnotized.

Probably the easiest way to explain hypnosis is that a hypnotic trance state merely breaks down the barriers between the unconscious (subconscious) mind and the conscious mind.

The conscious mind is the mind that you think actively with and have the most control over during a waking state.

When we sleep and particularly when we dream, the barrier between the unconscious and conscious minds breaks down and allows the two to communicate.

A hypnotic trance is similar to a dream state except that you are awake.
