When you have a hysterectomy..?

what exactly do they do? we were talkinjg about this at my work..if they take your uterus out, like, is there just an empty space there? or like what do they do? how do they go about it?

When they take the uterus out, then your other organs fill the space. If the cervix is removed (as is usual with hysterectomies), then the vagina is closed off like you'd tie off a sock. The uterus DOES help to support lots of your organs, so having it removed can, depending on the person, cause problems with your pelvic floor muscles, so you might have some incontinence problems, and other muscles in the area might be weak. It might interfere with orgasm, too. Though that's only for some. For others it's better than before, when they were in pain.

Quite frequently, when they do a hysterectomy, they also remove the ovarie and fallopian tubes. That can potentially cause many systemic problems, unless hormones are taken.

they remove the uterus (sometimes ovaries, too) and do some reconstruction in your abdominal interior to support the remaining organs, most notably the bladder, which every pregnant woman can tell you from experience is anchored directly on the uterus (that's why they are always peeing)...I only know this because I read the complete surgical report from my operation...actually, one is almost better off not knowing the grisly details, I think...

they take ovaries and uterus out.then they sew the hole shut that is the back of the vagina where the cervix was.nothing is any different other than the cervix is not in the vagina any more

Partial Hysterectomy = Taking everything but the ovaries

Total hysterectomy = They take everything including the ovaries.

They close where the cervix used to be.

They can do a vaginal hysterectomy or abdominal and depends on whats going on to determine which way they are going in.

I had a hysterectomy years about 10 years ago because I had a lot of fibroids. The fibroids were giving me very heavy periods and a lot of pain. The doctor made 3, one inch incisions and inserted his tools. They cut the uterus out and then took it out through my vagina. The surgery that I had was very non-invasive but I still had to stay home from work for 6 weeks. No lifting or pusing the vacuum or anything. I don't regret having a hysterectomy at all. I guess there is just an empty space there but I still have my ovaries.
