Has anyone suffered from adhesions about a hysterectomy? |
My operation was in Nov 2005, I had an abdominal operation and had a full hysterectomy. i have been looking around and these are a few sites i found for you i had the operation for adhesions,i dont know wot exercises you do i was not told to do any but would love to know.....b4 my op the pain was indescibable, adhesions is a medical emergancy i know just how you feel.any ache pain in tummy i get scared incase it em again.i am in same position i would also like to talk or find a site to talk on aswel Adhesions are a form of scar tissue that can grow between a surgical site and uninjured tissue. Further surgery doesn't help if you have that condition because they just come back on the newly injured tissue. Exercises help stretch the tissue as it developes so there is no pulling or pain and internal organs do not get realigned so they twist or are distorted and don't function correctly. Your surgeon should have told you about this possibility at the time of your surgery and you should have been checked regularly for the beginning of adhesion formation. Do your exercises faithfully and you will gradually get some relief. You will have to do special exercises for the rest of your life to keep them flexible. I am sorry. So many people get adhesions after abdominal surgeries. I wish more people knew about them BEFORE they had surgery. It's an unpleasant and not very uncommon aftereffect. Fortunately, time and tension or light pull on the adhesion will allow it to stretch as it matures. You definitely don't want to allow the adhesion to rest in the "short" position and let it get healed like that. Do the stretches you were given and avoid surgery unless it is absolutely necessary. You run the risk of redeveloping adhesions from the the surgery to "fix" the adhesions as well. Some people have dangerous adhesions that squeeze the intestines and block them. These are very rare and sometimes require surgery if the blockage gets worse. I had a full hyster. in Oct 2003. The scarring will thin as it matures and will elongate and become less bothersome or "disappear" completely in most cases. I hope this is what happens for you!! Hang in there! I had these after my operation(same as you) a year ago. I thought I would need an operation, but carrying on with my normal day to day life, ie, doing housework etc, I have no symptoms at all now. I think your exercises should work. Morning, Ginger. My mother had a hysterectomy way back in 1974 - 10 years later she had adhesions, which grew at a rate, thereby restricting the ureters and the flow of urine in the bladder. She was then put on steroids to reduce the inflammation and they did the trick. There's nothing you can do about adhesions, really, they are a by-product following surgery such as a hysterectomy. I am not aware that exercises would help adhesions, but I am no doctor so the advice you have been given may well be right. Steroids do have an anti-inflammatory effect and may well help in your case. Sorry but I don't know of any websites that would offer advice/help. You might fare well if you go to your doctor and talk about it. One word of advice - keep an eye on them, because like I said above mum had them growing round her ureters - the first symptom that they became a problem was severe backache. After my hysterectomy, I had acupuncture to minimize adhesions. They're common with ANY abdominal surgery and despite the acupuncture, I developed then anyway. |
