How much should a hysterectomy cost?

For necessary reasons, I am having a hysto and do not think it will be covered by my insurance(I have a student health plan that is fickle about what can and can't be covered. It only covers bare minimums and I have to practically be dying for the plan to go into effect).

My surgeon's assistant quoted the procedure to cost a bit over 30 thousand dollars. About 25 thousand of it was all in hospital fees!

I've heard of hystos costing between seven to fourteen thousand at most- this price seems insanely high! Does this sound right to anyone else?

Is there anything I can do in advance to negotiate the price? I have little experience with hospitals and doctors and would really appreciate any input or advice.

My background: I'm currently attending University and really don't make much money.

You should look into Patient Advocacy Programs. The best one is included with MySimpleCard. It can actually save money both to you and your health insurance company. See if it makes sense to you as a supplement. They are NOT fickle about the surgeries at all, they will always help.

MY GOD that is way more than I was thinking. I think your best bet would be to apply for Medicaid, if you can qualify. Also many people aren't aware that hospitals have to "give away" a certain amount of care each year to keep federal funds coming in. You might be able to get that written off, I would get ahold of a social worker at your local hospital...and see if they can help you.

Hope that helps and good luck
