My wife had a partial hysterectomy 10 years ago. what did they take out?

and if it's a partial, what did they leave in? she still have to go in for a pap smear, why? and why is she having hot flashes if she don't have periods anymore?

her uteris ruptured during the delievery of our daughter. she kept bleeding and they couldn't figure out why, the doctor said that if he don't go in now to fnd out whats wrong she will die cause she lost too much blood. they pumped six pints of bleed into her during the operation.

A partial hyterectomy means that the cervix was left in place; and so your wife must still get pap smears to screen for cervical cancer. The cervix is not always removed because it can provide support to other structures, so unless there is a problem with the cevix itself it isn't always removed. A total hysterectomy means both the uterus and the cervix is removed, a partial hysterectomy only the uterus is removed and the cervix is left.

Removing the ovaries is called: oopherectomy. Removing the fallopian tubes is called a salpingectomy. Unless your wife had those procedures then she still has her ovaries and fallopian tubes. That means her ovaries are still producing hormones and she can have some symptoms of menopause in a natural way rather than abrubtly as happens when they are surgically removed. Hot flashes are caused by changing hormone levels, so even though a woman has no uterus (and no periods) she can still get hot flashes.

You are most welcome. Thanks to you too! Report It

They took out part of her uterus...most likely they left the ovaries in. She doesn't need a pap anymore. The hot flashes are menopause...it's normal and a hysterectomy can bring it on earlier than normal.

I had a partial hysterectomy about 14 years ago. They took my uterus and cervix out. Left in the ovaries. My doctors still insist that i should have a pelvic exam annually. The ovaries are what controls when menepause starts so hot flashes and the rest are to be expected. sometimes, it depends on the reason for the hysterectomy, doctors take the ovaries when they take the uterus. then the women goes into menepause immediately.

TO BETTER UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO GO TO
wikipedia.org enter and type in hyserectomy--all you will need to know and find.

No one here will be able to answer this for you. It is like a combination pool shot, a lot of variables. You should give her doc a call and have a little chat! Good on you for asking and wanting to help her in what she is going through! KUDOS!!
Hugs, Scoot

You mean to say the two of you don't know what was removed?
If it was your motorcycle you'd know.lol

George Burns said it best ..." they took out the baby carriage, but left the playpen "

Doesn't SHE know? Didn't her doctor tell her? Why are you asking US? Ask your WIFE.
