I need a bit of reassurance re: planned hysterectomy-?

6 years ago, I had an abnormal pap- level 4 displaysia w/ pre- cancer caused by HPV- I had a leep and a cold knife cone. 95 % of the time these procedures take care of it, but I am in the 5% it did not and am having to go through it all again - I had my tubes tied after my last son, so I am not planning on having anymore kids -
HPV is not curable, so I could have yet another quick fix leep, but then in a few years, have to do it all over again or I could now, while I have great insurance, go ahead and have a hysterectomy and not have to worry about it again. I am really leaning toward the hysterectomy, but if anyone else has been in a similar situation and has some advice to offer - I would love to hear it!
Like I said - my tubes are tied and we are not having anymore children-
Oh- I forgot to mention the very strong presence of cancer in my family- my mother has 6 sisters, I have 3 - of us all, my mother and I are the only women left who have a uterus.

It sounds like a good idea. I did not have the exact problem, but had large ovarian cysts that were solid (not fluid filled) and bilateral. More chance of cancer with that (luckily it wasn't).
I chose to have not just the cysts removed, but the ovaries removed as well so as to prevent recurrance. I'm only 41, so I went into an early surgical menopause, but so far so good... no hot flashes etc. I am on a natural prescription hormone patch.
I can't tell you what to do, but I would be leaning toward the hysterectomy as well if I were you. My recovery was fairly quick- out of work for one week & then I was ok to return to work- no sex & no heavy exercise for 3-4 weeks after.
Best of luck

Anna,
I had stage 5 cervical cancer in 1984, I had a total hysterectomy, it was the best thing I ever did. No more periods, no worries bout that nasty old cancer, I had a better outlook on life, enjoyed sex more, did not have to worry about getting pregnant, or bleeding or anything anymore.
When they do it, make sure they do a radical, taking ovaries too, or you will just have to go through it again maybe in a few years. I have never taken hormones either. Things are good. Good luck, and a speedy recovery, once you are home, dont over due lifting of mopping or sweeping and dont drive for 6-8 weeks, take it easy and let everything heal good.
