How safe is a hysterectomy for an elderly patient?

My mum is 72 and is due to have a hysterectomy today, she had a polyp removed a few months ago which turned out to be cancerous and although it does not seem to have spread and her general health is OK, they want to do a hysterectomy as the next part of her treatment.

She's not very strong, and I'm really worried about her undergoing the surgery as I know its a major operation. The nurse told me that the doctor would not agree to operate if they didn't think she was strong enough, but my brother has been scaring me, saying how "frail" mum has got lately and how he doesn't think she'll be able to cope with the surgery.

Has anyone had experience of this sort of op in an elderly patient? I'm just so worried at the moment.

Please get at least one other opinion from a reputable doctor. No one should have a hysterectomy without a second opinion and in this case her age and the fact that she has already been through menopause is reason to consult at least one other doctor.
