Do I need a hysterectomy??

During the last month &a 1/2 I've had 3 periods, totaling about 20 days. I went to the gyno (a nurse practioner)and she said that I needed a vaginal ultrasound, I just had a ultrasound a couple of weeks ago. I'm 39 yrs old and most of the women on my mom's side of the family have had hysterectomies by the time they were 42. I can't take 2 periods a month. Do you guys think I should go ahead and tell the dr. I want a hysterectomy or put up with this mess? I have a friend that has just had one and she says I really need to have this done, she said if this keeps up, I'll be even weaker and I'm already anemic. And, I'd really like to get rid of all the PAIN, LOTS of PAIN!!!!!!

My mom was bleeding badly, my aunt had endometrosis, my other aunt was bleeding badly too and my grandmother, her I'm not really sure about. I also have alot of other health issues, I'm a diabetic(for 26 yrs.) , kidney damage due to the diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid problems. And with all these problems, this just adds more stress, thats not good for the diabetes.

You poor thing. If you're done having children and/or don't plan on having children in the future, a hysterectomy may be a good choice for you. Especially since the bleeding has caused you to become anemic.

Keep in mind that the surgery itself leaves you in pain too, and the recovery takes time. It will however free you from the frequent periods and the pain.

BUT if you have a complete hysterectomy and remove the ovaries as well, this can throw you into an early menopause.

What were the reasons that your family members had this done? Fibroids? Cysts?

Talk about the pros and cons with your doctor, but mention you're seriously considering this. Are you seeing an OB-GYN? If not get a referral.

Best of luck!

** Edit after seeing the details - alright, definitely consider it. In your case I think it's worth it. But again like I said, weigh out the pros and cons with your doc before making your decision.

Your doctor would know better than anyone here on yahoo answers. Just ask your doctor what he/she thinks would work best for you. Explore your options.

Look into the Novasure procedure instead of a hysterectomy. They also have a website with a free CS

Well, hysterectomies are last resort. Your doctor can most likely fix the problem without going through all that trouble.

I can't tell you what you need though, but my aunt had a hysterectomy because she bled for a year straight. Without stopping. I don't think they'll want to do it if you're bleeding twice a month. They'll probably give you something to make it more regular. As for the anemia, they can give you iron pills for that. I've been anemic before. Didn't need a hysterectomy. but you're going to have to talk to your doctor about this and do what they say. Not what people on the internet say.

Good luck.

You've got other options. Birth control is the one I use. (I would either not have a period for a few years or bleed for months at a time until I finally got pills to stop it.) Endometrial ablation is an option too and the one I would go with if the pills stopped working. It's done in the office and you keep your uterus. Basically it cauterizes your endometrium so that you don't menstruate anymore... it's not as bad as it sounds. Then there is also the Mirena IUC that you might have seen on TV. My mom had a hysterectomy for endometriosis and if you have one you will most likely have dryness problems and may have to use a hormone cream vaginally... your relatives may have told you of these joys! That is why I would opt for endometrial ablation. Good luck! I know what you're going through, hang in there!
