Got to have a full hysterectomy in two weeks time. Any tips on what I can and can't do please when I arrive

home from hospital. I know they will give me instructions and exercises but it would help to hear from others who have been in this situation. My husband has never had to look after me before as I'm so independent and do everything but I want to get well as quickly as possible. They've said 6 to 12 weeks before I can drive again and about 3 to 4 months recovery and I can't work during that time. I've got a lot of things planned that I can just sit and do like jewellery making, sewing, greeting cards etc as well as loads of books to read. I will be in hospital about 4 or 5 days.

If you have been through a full hysterectomy when you were approx 50, maybe you can give me some help. I would be really grateful.

Thank you very much.

I'd be interested to hear what happens while you are in hospital just after the op. How long do they leave the catheter in, drips etc, I suppose depends on how well you are. Any info would be helpful about what happened to you while you were in the hospital before you were allowed home. I haven't had my pre-op assessment yet and really wondered what questions and how many to ask!!! Thanks.

well the doctor told you right no driving no heavy lifting and if you have to take stairs take them one at a time coughing and sneezing will be hard the first week so keep a pillow to put against you when you do, the first week all i did was sleep but i was on percoset, after that i cooked but my husband got out all the pots and pans he carried the plates and whatnot did the laundry, don't worry you will be back to normal and then you can go back to all your regular activities

6 weeks of no driving? I was told 4 weeks. My mom also drove within the first 4 weeks...lol. My mom was in her 40s when she had hers done. I was 18 when my partial was done. She was out of the hospital the next day. I was in for about 5-6 days but I had another complications that didn't have anything to do with the hysterectomy.

I wasn't 50 when I had one ,but it was medically necessary (without notice) , to have one when I was 25, during a c-section. I had to wait 6 weeks before sex, no lifting more than 10 lbs. I could wash dishes and cook when I felt like it and do alot of warm sitz baths. But no sweeping and vacuming and no lifting heavy baskets of wet clothes from washer to dryer or hanging them outside. No driving for 6 weeks. Hold a pillow and keep it near you for times when you need to cough.. this prevents stress and hurting to the stomach muscles.Eat right and you 'll heal quickly.
