Normal Symptoms for After Dog Hysterectomy? |
My dog had a hysterectomy today. She is now refusing to eat or go to the bathroom, is hardly moving around, and has only had a few sips of water. Are these normal for right after a hysterectomy? She is a havanese, about 10 years old, and is normal weight (10 lbs.?) the anthesia needed to perform the surgery needs time to wear off.she may have needed more due to the tumor being removed.i don't know how many hours it has been but in away i feel she perhaps overly sedated but she should be ok after awhile.if she's not ok after 48 hours i would contact vet.do not fret yet,it does take awhile for anathesia to wear off.God Bless that you care for your pet and are doing your best to help her!! First of all how old was the dog and reasoning for having her spayed? If shes younger and was not showing signs of being sick prior to her hysterectomy these symptoms sound normal. Most anesthetics stay on board for at least 24hours. Especially if they had given her some additional pain medications after her surgery which can cause drowsinesses. Keep in mind shes painful, moving around is going to be difficult. I wouldn't even try to feed her food within the first 24 hours, food after an anesthetic can cause them to vomit and an upset stomach. And if you fasted her before surgery which is usually recommended to avoid them from being sick and or using the bathroom on the surgery table or in recovery, she may not have to use the bathroom. Especially if shes not eating. If your still really concerned by tomorrow call your vet and don't be surprised if shes not eating normal for at least 2 days. Just make sure shes eating some. Force feed tomorrow :) good luck. I am a RVT. Hope This helps. They are pretty sore and don't feel good at first. If your dog is an older dog, that might make it worse also. As long as she is drinking water it won't hurt her to not eat for a day. If she doesn't seem better tomorrow I would call the vet and let them know what is going on. Just remember she has been cut on and that hurts. My dogs have always recovered fast from spaying or neutering but they weren't as old as yours. I saw a big improvement the second day. The anesthesia wipes them out also. Good luck and call your vet if she isn't doing better tomorrow. Yes this is normal. Check her temp and make sure she isn't running a fever. First day they usually lay around and her being 10 years old she won't bounce right back as a pup does.she should want to eat a lil something tomorrow. When she starts walking that will stimulate her to have a bowel movement. If she is drinking offer her more fluids until she feels like eating. |
