Endometrial ablation vs. hysterectomy......?

Does anybody have some info or advice they could give me? I have very heavy menstrual bleeding and as a result I'm anemic. The bleeding is heavy and severe enough to interfere with my life. I also am experiencing a tremendous amount of pain in my right ovary, with no indication of ovarian cysts. My gyno and I had decided to schedule me to have a hysterectomy and to take the right ovary out at the same time. But I have been reading about endometrial ablation and wonder if that might be a better way to go...obviously a much less invasive procedure and it would appear that the side effects would be less. I've read that having your uterus removed makes a woman 7 times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease than a woman with her uterus. If anybody knows anything they can pass onto me about this, I sure would be grateful! Thanks!

Oh, and I would still have the ovary removed either way of course.....

I had an ablation done in January. It was the Novasure Ablation and I am very happy with the results. With an ablation there is not a guarantee of being bloodless, the goal is to have lighter/more manageable periods. I wanted a hysterectomy at the time, but as I had no fibroids or endemetrois or any reasons other than nonstop bleeding my Dr decided to do the Novasure. With an ablation there are a small percentage that end up bloodless, so far I am one of the lucky ones. The younger you are the greater chance of the lining regenerating and periods resuming. My surgeery was not bad, the recovery was easy..much less time than recovering from a hysterectomy. However I will disagree with the previous post that said to have an ablation to maintain your fertility. What I read is that you need to have some form of birth control in place as it is very risky to be pregnant after an ablation, both to the fetus and the mother. So make sure you are prepared or at least ask your Dr about that.

Endometrial ablation would help with the excess bleeding, which would help with your anemia. However, it would not help at all with your ovarian cysts (I think you are aware of that, based on the edit to your question). Endometrial ablation may be effective for some time, and then you may eventually need a hysterectomy anyway. If you are planning on having children, you would obviously want to have the endometrial ablation to maintain fertility. However, if that is not an issue, you probably want to go ahead with the hysterectomy and right oophorectomy (removal of the right ovary). Having a uterus or not does not affect a women's risk of cardiovascular disease.
