Depressed after hysterectomy?

I had a hysterectomy last month for fibroids and bleeding that couldn't be controlled. I hadn't even consider having kids before surgery but now that the option has been taken away I feel lost and angry. I can't shake feeling depressed and I end up crying all the time. I'm hoping that I will feel better when I can return to work to take my mind off of it. I still have my ovaries, however maybe they're in shock from surgery? Am I just hormonal?

You should ask your surgeon for a referral to a therapist. Post-hysterectomy depression is fairly common; it's completely psychological for all the reasons you've just mentioned.

So DO get in to talk to someone....you'll be fine, but you'll be better sooner if you can see someone to help you through it.

you might be hormonal but also something you had the option about before has been taken away. when something is taken away most want it more...

just rest and concentrate on the things in life that you love. everything always works out in the end.

Hugs. Been where you are. I was fortunate/blessed to have one child before I had to have a hysterectomy. I can imagine what you have been feeling. Good news is that you still have your ovaries and you should be "back on track" in all areas in a while. It varies with every woman. The emotional healing usually comes a bit slower than actual physical healing but it takes the whole body about a year to get back in the "norm."

You might try thinking of the surgery more as an option to live a better quality of life than a "loss." It might help with the anger. I had uterine cancer so I didn't feel the same since of "loss" -- I did feel a bit "robbed" until I really started appreciating the gift of life. I'd heard rumors and old wives tales about never enjoying lovemaking again, and being half a woman, blah blah blah. I was 30 years old! Soon realized those ladies had issues and I didn't share them.

Talk with friends who've had similar problems or hysterectomies or your doc or a counselor if it doesn't feel better soon. It may be hormonal until your ovaries are "reset" and producing on schedule.

Bright side: It's one day at a time and one day you may wake up and decide that you want to be a gift to some child who has no one. It could happen.

Hugs again.
