Precancerous cells on cervix...after hysterectomy? |
I just had a hysterectomy 6 days ago, had it all removed due to endomitriosis and fibroid tumors. My doctor called today with the lab report. He said everything looked like it would be ok now, just had endo. pretty bad. However, he told me I had precancerous cells on my cervix. He said that I will need paps every 6 months, which is fine. What is my next step? Is there a way they can get rid of those precancerous cells before the turn cancerous? Or do they just leave them alone until they turn cancerous, which is pretty scary. Should I just have my cervix removed now? I'm freakin out. i am only 29. Anybody been through this or know anything about this? I go back for my 6 week checkup but he won't do a pap due to just having the hysterectomy. Help! Well, they froze mine off, which was pretty easy. I had it done at the doctor's office and it only took about 15/20 minutes. It felt like a period afterwards, but was no biggie. A pap right after the surgery would be distorted by inflammation, and would be useless. Don't worry, precancerous cervical cells won't change overnight, and they may never become cancerous. They may just turn normal again. Just keep your pap smear appointment, and if it shows the precancerous cells again, you can get it treated when the time comes, but don't worry about it right now. Discuss your fears with your doctor, who will be able to explain it to you more specifically. You can have the pre cancerous cells lasered off by having a colposcopy which is just like a smear but they also insert a tiny camera and laser to burn off the cells. Is usually easy to detect pre-cancerous cells as they look different. your cervix is injected with lidocaine to numb area before they laser but is done as an outpatient appointment and shouldn't cause any problems and usually deals with the problem. Ask at your check up. The reason you'll be getting a pap smear every 6 months is so that they can watch those cells and make sure that they don't get any worse. What you have is something called HPV. Your body can fight off HPV. If the cells worsen, they will do something called a Colposcopy, which is when they use a machine to magnify your cervix so that they can see what they're dealing with. They will most likely take a biopsy of that area and send it to a lab. Based on those results, they will either keep a close watch on you every 6 months..or they will do something called a LEEP. A LEEP is when they remove the bad area. All of this sounds scary at first, but you get very used to it..and when you learn more about it you realize how less serious it is than you thought. |
