Can a person have an elective hysterectomy?

I need to settle a bet...

Ok well if the answer is yes as most seem to agree it is then I lost the bet...boo!

Yes you can have an elective hysterectomy. Here's the catch:

A good Gynecologist will not perform this surgery if it is not medically necessary. It's in your best interest to keep your ovaries for necessary hormone production and overall health purposes.

Your insurance will not pay for an elective hysterectomy.

In the world we live in, you CAN find a gynecologist who will perform an elective hysterectomy. Just keep in mind, that the doctor who is willing to perform such an unwarranted procedure, is NOT thinking in the best interest of YOUR health. He or she is only seeing dollar signs.

If your question is only based on a bet and you're not looking to have a hysterectomy for a medical necessity ----you'll win the bet. The reality is that an elective hysterectomy is very unhealthy and NO GOOD DOCTOR would perform it.

Good luck!

NOTE: NOT true, "titoalbanaples". In fact, most hysterectomies performed are scheduled surgeries. It's rare to have an "emergency" or "urgent" hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is NOT an elective surgery.....period. There Has to be a show of medical necessity AND after all other treatments and options have been exhausted. Having a hysterectomy is a last resort procedure. A lot has changed over the past 50 years regarding this topic, as technology has made great advances in alternative treatments to hysterectomies. As I stated --- you CAN still find a gynecologist who WILL perform an elective hysterectomy -----but for all the wrong reasons. "Elective" means: NOT NECESSARY. A good Gynecologist will not perform this procedure. An uncaring and money-hungry Gynecologist will.

To settle the Asker's bet ....the answer is YES you can have an elective hysterectomy ----no thanks to bad doctors. (sigh)

i had a hysterectomy in 2000 i was 27. i had severe endometriosis..do you have pain? heavy bleeding? do you have kids? how old are you?

Of course, millions are done every year. In fact many more are done electively than urgent or emergently.
