Is a hysterectomy painful?

I've seen many different answers on here and would like to hear from anyone w/ experience in this subject? How long is the procedure?

Yes as its a surgery. Keep in mind that even though they put you to sleep for the procedure any surgeries on the abdominal area tend to be the most painful because no matter what you do from breathing or moving around you use your abdominal muscles.

Based on experience....

During the surgery (within an hour as long as there won't be any complications), since you will be under general anaesthesia, NO, obviously it won't hurt.

BUT, after the anaesthesia has worn off, YES it is oh-so darn painful!

Although you will be given pain killers, the many cut layers in your belly will take time to heal; this is what sends the pain signals to your brain.

Hope I didn't scare you if you will be undergoing hysterectomy! But better removed than contained. I'm sure your wise doctor has advised you well. Afterall, you will also heal over time. I promise you, the pain will eventually go away.

Cheers.

I have had this experience ,depending on how the surgeon decides to perform the surgery, vaginally there is not to much pain which my boss had .Opening up the stomack does cause a lot of pain but you can reduce this by bending knees to get up ,holding a pillow tightly on your stomack when you need to cough or sneeze and walking slowly for short distances.I was in the hospital for a week and had to take things easy for a month. The problem is keeping your mind occupied and not dwelling on what you have lost because mentally and physically it doses not help you to heal.If you can accomplish this you will be okey.

Most of the time it can be done as an out patient procedure which means that you would go home the same day. It will depend on the surgery type and your doctors preference as well. I have not personally had one, but two of my close friends have and they said that they had a little discomfort for a few days after, but that the medication the doctor gave them took care of it. Just be sure to rest and talk to your doctor about anything that worried you because I have found that things are less scary if you know what to expect t. Best of luck.

I just had a hysterectomy in August. It was done laproscopic so, it was an outpatient procedure. I went in at 8am and was home by 3pm. Procedure took about 2 1/2 hours, I was sore the first two days but the painkillers helped. Get lots of rest and don't do any heavy(over 10lbs) lifting for a while. Good Luck

Depend on the situation. Most people take 1-2 hrs. AT the time that they are doing the hysterectomy it does not hurt but after when the pain meds start to wear off then it hurts. The doc will prescribe you a strong pain pill for you to take.
