Is it possible for women to bleed every month after having a hysterectomy?

This would be if she keeps her cervix.

If a woman had the hysterectomy for endometriosis or adenomyosis then it is possible for her to continue bleeding every month sometimes very heavy. The cervix is still part of the uterus. I answered a previous question on if there's a difference between total and partial hysterectomy. Because the cervix is part of the uterus during a hysterectomy if both are taken it's a total hysterectomy regardless if ovaries are taken or not. The cervix or neck of the uterus is about the size of a coat button and is capable of having a lining to get passed out. Some women have even gone back in to get their cervix taken out which is another big surgery. There is something dr's can do to prevent this like cauterizing the cervix to prevent it from continuing to build up a linining. Here are some posts I'm including for others to see. So yes it's possible.

No More Periods?...Yeah Right!

Adenomyosis, should i have had my cervix removed?

hi

"i had SAh 18th feb,due to dysfunctional uterine bleeding. On my surgeons advise i choose to keep my cervix and ovaries as i am 33.However,when my uterus was removed the results were adenomyosis.I now seem to have mini periods every 28days,the last being very painful although not much bleeding."

Anyone here keep cervix and then regret the decision later?

"I too was OK with keeping my cervix, and mini-periods. Problem was I didn't have min-periods, I had regular periods for 3 months. I was also having cervical pain that felt like someone opening a umbrella with spikes on the end. All of this even after I had my cervix cauterized during my LSH.
I ended up having a trachelectomy, and my right ovary removed several weeks after my LSH. I am now glad to say I am pain-free, and loving life."

No. The period is caused by the shedding of the uterine wall that builds up once a month. After the removal of the uterus during a hysterectomy, there will be no build up of a lining and no period. The cervix has nothing to do with it, it is simply the barrier in between the vagina and the uterus.
