Why is the recovery time for a hysterectomy 6 weeks and does it changes your sexual desires? |
Why is the recovery time for a hysterectomy 6 weeks and does it changes your sexual desires? There are alot of changes after you have a hysterectomy, and everyone is very different. After mine in Dec 2003, I had people telling me different advice all the time about symptoms I will be getting. I was recovered in about a month after mine, and my sexual drive went down at first, but after that, it was better than it was b4 the surgery. I had no more pain, and of course my periods were gone too. I went on hormone replacement therapy, estrogen and testosterone. This so far has made the hot flashes happen less often, and I am sleeping better too. No one can tell you what is going to happen to you, it just depends on your body. Good luck to you! Hope all is well.... Source(s): personal experience....been through it Because that is how long it takes the body to recover from any major surgery.....and they say it doesn't change your sexual desire but everyone is different. a hysterectomy is a serious ailment and if you don't heal properly it could make you sick. Trust me, some people say their sex drive is higher, some say it's lower, but it depends all on the hormones, so you have no control over that! It takes six weeks to heal because all the tissue is internal and healing takes twice as long as outside the body. Additionally, that is very tender tissue in there with lots of nerves. Yes, it could change her sexual desire for a while because she's going to be scared it will hurt or that the stiches will rip. If she had a complete hystorectomy she should talk to a OBGYN about possible hormone replacement therapy. That will help her get back to normal. Be supportive of her because other than a mastectomy this is the toughest surgery for a woman to recover from -- mentally. Good Luck! It's a MAJOR surgery, it takes time to heal when you'vejust gotten gutted like a fish. I've taken meds that have similar impact hormonally as a hysterectomy, and mine didn't change at all. If you're having surgery for endo - consider re-thinking that decision. Lots of studies have shown that just CUTTING out the endo gets rid of it more effectively than burning it off (which is what most doctors choose to do during a laparoscopy). You may have options! I had a partial hysterectomy 11 years ago and my sexual drive went up--and got way better overall! As for why it takes so long to heal from this surgery: it is a major surgery involving work on internal nerves, etc. This takes much longer to heal than dealing with a cut on the skin. It also depends on how the hysterectomy is done. What I mean is: will it be a bikini cut done on the bikini line, or will it be done vaginally where there is only a small incision or two (which means much less healing time)? A friend of mine had hers done vaginally (though not everyone can do this) and she was healed up within a few days. Every person is different as to when they will heal and how well they will heal, and the same goes for the sex drive. That can go up or down, or even stay the same. It won't be known until weeks after the surgery when the body is fully healed. I can tell you, though, that the first time or two might hurt a bit. It can also be scarey not knowing if it will hurt or not. By the end of six weeks, the stitches will be healed up so there should be no worry about 'ripping out stitches.' If there is any pain the first couple of times (which there was some discomfort for me), then it will disappear in time (amount of time is unknown, though, as each person is different). |
