Tubal or hysterectomy?

which is better to have: a tubal ligation or a hysterectomy? And what happens afterwards like do you still have your period and stuff. Is is easier for the guy to get fixed or a woman?

For birth control purposes, your only surgical choice is a tubal ligation. No medical doctor will perform a hysterectomy for that reason. It is vascular surgery, and there is the risk of major blood loss. Tubals can be done very easily now - laparoscopic surgery - so just tiny little scars. Unless you are having a c-section and then they'll do it while you're already opened up. Piece of cake (sort of).

Vasectomy is even easier. Outpatient surgery ... they just do a little snip snip and he's all set. Tubal ligation will usually require an overnight stay, so you're looking at a hospital bill versus an office bill. Big price difference.

After a tubal, you will still have a period. And of course there is about a 1% chance of getting pregnant. I think a vasectomy has a slighter lower risk of conception after the procedure has been performed.

I had a tubal after my son was born. Had a c-section so it was very easy .. they just rummaged around and cauterized the tubes, popped everything back into place, and that was that. They told me the tubal ligation would make the recovery a little harder, but in all honesty this was my easiest c-section out of three, so I don't think a basic tubal ligation would be any thing hard to recover from.
A hysterectomy is only performed if it MUST be... there are whole and partial. You will go into early menopause which can cause a mountain of other issues. You cannot request this surgery, they won't do it, and you don't want it

A tubal is just where they cut and seal your tubes so the eggs can never make it into the uterus anymore. It's fairly simple, and you have no adverse side effects other than being barren.
As said above you can not request a hysterectomy just to deture pregnancy. There has to be a diagnosed medical reason. No you will no longer have your period.

A tubal you will no longer be able to get pregnant but will still have your period.
It's easier for a guy, as the parts they need to snip are in the dangly parts, and they don't have to cut into the abdomen.

A tubal ligation, while surgery, is a far simpler procedure than a hysterectomy. They snip (and cauterize, I think) the tubes that carry the egg to where it can get fertilized. Everything continues working as before, but you won't get pregnant.

A hysterectomy is the total removal of a major organ, and I'd be surprised if you could find a doctor who would do it if there was no disease. If I found such a doc, I don't think I'd let him lay a finger on, much less in, me. Cutting parts of people out of them for no good reason is not good medicine, IMO. No, you wouldn't have periods, but you wouldn't have a uterus, either. You would continue to have monthly hormonal fluctuations.

First of all Hysterectomies are not used for birth control, Doctors do them for medical reasons only. After a hysterectomy no more periods but a host of other problems. Night sweats and mood swings the most common. Tubal ligation is used for birth control. You will still have your period after one. I encourage men to get fixed. They do no have the high risk of major side effects as us women do. I know a Mailman he had his done on a Friday afternoon and he was back to work on Monday. If he does get fixed he must do the follow up testing to make sure it has worked.

Everyone one and each couple are unique. You and your man should both go to your OB/GYN and your primary care doctor. Discuss all the options and make an informed decision. Good Luck!

Okay after I posted this I was able to read the other answers, A tubal ligation is a cut and cauterizing (burning) of the tubes. Yes you are barren after wards but their are consequences. The femlale reproductive system is complex. I like I said earlier everyone is unique. I told you ealrier I had a tubal when I was 25. I also had a hysterectomy in 2002 at the age of 36 due to Endometrosis. For years I had sever pain associatieid with my monthly. I was told all those years it was normal. Finally one doc I said I think it is Endometrosis but the only way to confirm it was to have a exploratory laproscopic surgery. He did the procedure and took pictures all my female parts were covered with Endometrosis. This doctor said that for some women the lining of the uters called the endo somthing will some times come out of the uterus and attach to other parts. This lining is what bleeds, so it causes much heavier periods. Endo is a weird thing because you can have just a small spot of it and have sever pain, or alot like I did have no pain at all. My doctor said this happens alot when women go off birth control. He said at that time he didn't know why, but birth control seem to keep the endo at bay.
Yes a tubal is better to get and a hysterectomy is only if you needed it medically. You still get your period with a tubal but there is no egg coming down to be fertilized. With the hysterectomy you do not get your period but like the previous post said it causes early menopause and lots of added problems with that. It is by far an easier procedure for a guy to get fixed, it's a doctor office procedure for them, a little freezing injected and a snip and they are on their way home. With a tubal you have to go in for actual surgery and will be in a fair deal of pain for a week or so. But most guys are too afraid to get anything done to them done there though.
I wouldn't go for a hysterectomy. There is no need. You have a healthy uterus so leave it there. Besides if you do have apartial hysterectomy (leavng your ovaries and cervix in place) your ovaries will still die before their time because uterus and ovaries share a common blood supply and you'll go into menopause prematurely. Tubal ligation is the better option and yes you'll still get your period. By the way it takes longer to recover from a hysterectomy.

And frankly speaking if you are in a serious long term relationship a vasectomy is the best option. It is simpler quicker and the guy heals faster and is ready to go in no time.

This is something that you will have to discuss with your partner. Because at the end of it all one of you will never be able to have children. Make sure it's what you want.
