Incontinence in my 1 year old dog?

My dog has been incontinent since about 3 months. She'll be sleeping on the floor or somewhere and then all of a sudden, she's in a puddle.
I took her to a vet, who recommended we let her have her first heat and then spay her to see if it would help. It didn't work. We tried phenylpropanolamine and she had a horrible reaction - she started throwing up until there was nothing left inside her but bile.
She still does it from time to time, but only if i forget to let her out to pee. I want to know if there are any other drugs or treatments on the market that i can ask my vet about before i meet with her [my vet] next week?

i don't need dumb answers please - this is a serious question.

Spaying made it worse. It's called spay incontinence.

You may just have to keep her in an area that is easily cleaned.

Insead of putting her on meds, try remembering to take her to the restroom or set up a doggy door for her to use. Set up a schedule so you'll remember and she can have a regular time to use the restroom so she doesn't just hold it until she can't anymore.

Really....why don't you remember to let her out. Maybe it won't happen?

You may want to get her bloodwork checked for things like diabetes just to be safe and rule that out.

When my elderly b*tch started having this issue I made a point to let her out moments before I went to bed at 11 p.m., and then set my alarm for 3 a.m. to let her out again (although there were times both of us were less than thrilled to get up).

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

I also started using washable blankets for her bed piled up rather than a stuffed, non-washable dog bed.

And spaying definately doesn't help the issue.

My two yr old Jack Russell Terrier is on Proin for this ask your vet about that, and I give it to her with a meal and all is well, my Moms German Shepherd mix will vomit if not given with the meal, she never got sick when given with a meal. It's a chewable tablet and only cost me 15 bucks every 3 months for my dog. Also maybe the dose was to high, my girl was on twice daily and cut back to once daily, it's been a yr and no problems, Holly my moms dog finally after 11 yrs got put on twice daily but again she splits the meals know for her. Best of luck and hopefully she'll get better, also one other thought talk with them on a urine sample to check for infection, it's a small possibility.

Been there, done that. If the PPA hasn't worked, probably nothing will. Has she been on Proin or Uro-eeze? (sp) You might have to resort to b**ch panties when she is in the house. She will more than likely be this way forever. Also have your vet check for a ph inbalance. You can also try vitamin C. It won't hurt. Sorry....she is sooo young. Good luck

My four year old lab has this same problem and has had it since she was a puppy. After bringing her to the vet to check for a uti
and that coming back negative it was determined the cause is from being spayed and that caused muscle weakness. When she would fall asleep especially if she were really tired from playing hard she would soak whatever she was sleeping on. She has been on Proin 50 tablets for about 31/2 years now and this has done the trick. She can usually go a couple of days if for some reason the pills are missed without wetting, but after that she will start peeing her bed again. The Proin is a prescription but you can buy it on line much cheaper then at the vets office. There are also holistic herbs
that are suppose to work and I am going to look into that. There are no side effects as far as I know with the Proin if the dosage is followed correctly. Good luck

1
Has she had a litter of puppies this can cause incontinence
2
Ask you Vet to give her a full blood test she may have diabeties which cause dogs to pee all the time, it also makes them thirsty all the time. You can have pills to help with this or insulin injections.
3
Is you dog nervous? Some times dogs pee if they are frightened or over excited. If the latter (ie you come into the room and she is jumping up and then pees whilst you stroke her) only praise her when she is in a calm submissive state. If she pees when she is nervous do not tell her off, simply ingore the mess and give her no eye contact, try not to make sudden noises or advance quickly towards her this couls be a reason for her wetting herself.
A nervious or over submissive ***** will leak urine as a sign to others that she is submissive and unthreatening. Others will do this on occasions though fright.
The cure for this is not to respond angrily but instead to boost her confidence by gentle training,a quiet life and kindness. Punishment or over excitement will make this kind of dog worse not better

Get your vet to test for a urine test for infection. It is not uncommon for a dog with an infection to have a sudden break down in house training. If an infection is found to be the cause it can usually be simply treated with a course of antibiotics. Also Xrays and ultra sound scans things like bladder stones can cause incontinence and are often curable.
5
A last resort for incontinence is to surgically reposition the bladder to sit further back in the body. This helps retention by tighening the muscles involved. The operation is called a Colposuspension, it is rather expensive and is usually done by a vet consultant at an animal hospital rather then a local vet practice.

Good luck I have had a dog with incontinence and it was a pain if you can get a flap fitted into your door so the dog can get out quicly if she needs to that will help.
