My pug had her anal sacs removed and now has incontinence. Is this temporary or permanent?

We just had the surgery on Thursday. She has been pooping non stop since then. We have had to keep her in her crate

Hopefully it is only temporary, but like REDD said, the anal glands are very close to the sphincter muscle and if they were damaged in surgery it could be permanent. It most likely is just temporary but call and ask your vet just in case.

It could go either way.

The anal sacs are very close to the anal sphincter muscle (the round muscle that keeps the anus closed).

Hopefully the muscle will regain tone soon and she will be able to hold it, but if something happened to it during surgery it may be something that only a vet can fix.

Call your vet and talk with them about your options.

My friend's pug had the same surgery several years ago- it was permanent for her dog- about 2 weeks- but it "can" be permanent. They have to cut the muscles and nerves around the anal area, which can cause incontinence.

same thing happened when my dog had to get emergency surgery on her tail. the gave her a medicine for antibiotics and pain and it gave her the runs for 3 days.
