Why is it that people who profess to meditate have such incontinence? |
"Incontinence" as described in Nichomachean ethics as a person who has a hard time controlling urges of all kinds--sexual, food, etc. Doesn't meditation eliminate incontinence and create virtuous noble persons who do not fret or get bothered by sexual urges? quite often people seek meditiation as method of self improvement and its really not meant to be a self improvement course. so yes i am sure there are lots of incontient soccer moms who profess to meditate but haven't figured out its a lot more than sitting in funny positions on the floor. i used to get hearty laughs when they had a yoga instructor come to work -- getting that bunch of heffers to understand simple yoga philosophy would be impossible -- getting them to sit in a 1/2 lotus would be a 6 week course in itself. getting them to eat frozen yougurt bananas foster woudn't be a chore at all though. double salad dressing with a manadarin chicken salad is all eastern philosophy they could handle. i don't think its exactly fair to lump together tantric wanna be soccer moms with monks. i hope that wasn't your point. Don't you mean "anally retentive"? Because a person meditates is not an indication of how well the person can control his or her basic human urges. May God bless you. Personal opinion. Hmmmm. Perhaps diligent meditation "merely" puts the urge in proper perspective, and facilitates the meditator in having a healthy as opposed to obsessive sex life? That would seem quite a favorable step in the right direction, eh? Compared to the usual troglodytes and their relentless dysfunctions? :)) LOL, I'll admit it, I really thought you were saying meditation caused people problematic bowel movements. Sorry, I learned the word incontinence from advertisements... To answer your question, I don't know of anybody who isn't occasionally laid low by their sexual urges, but to my knowlegde meditators are no more susceptible than anyone else. Since the supression of biological drives isn't really the purpose of most meditation, I'm curious what inspired your question. One might as well ask "Why aren't wall street traders better at charcoal sketches?" or "Why can't my hammer diagnose computer viruses?". The answer is, it's the wrong tool for the job you're trying to accomplish. That doesn't negate the value of the tool, just the craftsman who misuses it. they are obviously meditating about the wrong things. |
