Speaking for experience, what can an infertility specialist do that an OBGYN can't?

I am going to start my second round of Clomid this month and they are going to increase the dosage, but if it doesn't work I am moving on to an infertility specialist. I have a damaged fallopian tube, PCOS and a fibroid. I am almost 31 and have never been pregnant.

This is what they DO. OBGYNs don't really specialize in it. As a matter of fact, they are not trained that much in anything hormonal - PCOS being one. An RE is much more likely to prescribe Metformin and THEN Clomid while an OBGYN is likely to only prescribe Clomid for PCOS. An RE is great when you are not having success on your own or the traditional OBGYN route.

My OBGYN wasn't able to do anything for me...My fertility specialists has done everything so far. Have you had the HSG to see if your tubes are open? THis might be the next step. Then maybe an edometrial biopsy to see if there is adequate tissue for the egg to attach to during fertilization. These are important steps that your fertility specialist will do to ensure your body is ready for pregnancy...Good question though!

OB/GYN's only specialize in normal woman's health and in regular and normal OB. RE's take extra course work to learn more about infertility and how to treat it. They will be able to go further into fertility treatments that an OB can't. I've also learned that most OB's know almost nothing about PCOS which is a shame.

I have seen both a specialist and my OB/GYN. They are both very familiar with a woman's body, but it is no different than a Dr that specialize in any one field. They just know more about it because they study in depth on it. It is important to you to conceive a baby, and it is just as important to the specialist to help you. Good luck and Blessing!

In a word, a lot. Your OB is not trained in how to overcome the issues that you're having, your fertility dr or RE is.
