"I'm 38 & don't think I have infertility problems.Should I take infertility drugs anyway to insure pregnancy" |
Because of my age I really would like to have multiples. I'm getting married soon and would like to have children soon after. Is it safe to take fertility drugs early-like months before the wedding to be sure of a pregnancy. I would not take medication to ensure pregnancy. The problem with doing that is that there are side effects. If you take a follicle stimulating drug like Clomid it will inevitably increase your chances of having multiples. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but multiples are risky in that there is a higher incidence of miscarriage and birth defects in some situations. You don't want to mess around with your fertility if there is a good chance you don't need to. I would see a doctor and discuss all options with them openly and honestly before making a decision to go on medication. I wouldn't waste time. You need to consult your doctor. Some doctors have different feelings on the subject. Because you are over 35, you may be a candidate for infertility meds, but my doctor (I am 29) wanted me to wait six months incase I didn't really need the meds, that was ok with me at the time because infertility meds are very expensive. Also, you should know that it's possible the meds will work the very first time you take them, so you may not want to take them until the first cycle that you are married (if you are concerned about being pregnant before the wedding). Most healthy couples take about 6 months to get pregnant. It took me 3 years, but I have infertility issues. Not really. Medications come with risks and should only be used when needed. You should definitely call around and find a good obgyn...*I* personally don't think it's a good idea to try to get pregnant with multiples before your wedding...but to each her own. I just think that is a LOT to take on during a VERY stressful time and I really don't know if it would be even safe to take them if you DON'T need them. You wouldn't want to take any meds you don't need when it comes to pregnancy...so since I really don't know for a fact I would say to shop around and find a doc to explain the safety measures. Wow, that's a tough one. You probably won't find a doctor willing to give you fertility meds before you at least give it the old college try. Keep in mind that your eggs are all 38 too and even when successfully fertilized, they stand a much lower chance of developing. Don't get frustrated too soon if even after perfect timing you don't get pregnant. It will probably take at least a year unless you're really lucky. At age 30 I decided I wanted one more, I too wanted multiples and went to the OB doc for checkup and told him I was having trouble (even though I wasn't). This was Mid August and he said if I didn't concieve by Jan he would prescribe something. I became pregant as soon as I started trying and did indeed get pregnant with twin boys. So if I had taken the fertility meds, I might have ended up with quads or quints or more!! Just something to think about... the older you are the increase for multiples. There is no family history of multiples on my side. Good Luck to you!!! No doctor will give you fertility drugs if they aren't needed. I'm 35 & I asked him about Clomid. He said the complications of a multiple pregnancy are worse than the complications of being AMA (advanced maternal age which is 35+). Just try for a while & see what happens. Good luck! I would have a consultation with an oby/gyn to discuss your concerns. It really don鈥檛 think that taking those meds unnecessarily is a good idea, but the docs will be able to let you know for certain one way or the other. If they think it will help you get preg sooner then I say go for it! Do whatever you think is best! |
