Questions about first few visit's with infertility doctor..?

I am going to see my infertility Dr. with Kaiser hospital on the 18th.

They will do testing on me and my hubby..

Do you know what kind?

How do they test my husband? Tell me i dont have to "help" him

Can you help calm my nerves with what you went through?

You will have to answer many questions to start.

The first test they will run on you is on the 3rd day of your cycle. They will do bloodwork- to check many things and your different hormone levels. You will also have an ultrasound. They will be looking at the thickness of your lining, your ovaries and to see if you have any cysts or fibroids. It doesn't hurt at all. It is not a big deal. They will do more bloodwork and an ultrasound right before they think you are going to ovulate. It checks hormone levels again. You will then have more blood work once again to check your hormone levels about 7 days after you ovulate.

The other test they might do right away (or they might wait) is a HSG. It checks to see if you have any thing wrong with your uterus and if your tubes are blocked. This test is uncomfortable. Make sure you take 800mg of advil 30 minutes prior to the test and if you have a Xanax take that too. It will help you relax and the test will be tolerable.

What they do next depends on what they find in these tests.

For your husband: he will have bloodwork and they will ask for a semen sample to test his sperm. No, you don't have to help him. They will give him a sterile cup to ejaculate into. It needs to be turned in within an hour of being produced (closer to 30-45 minutes is better). If you live close to the doctor your husband can do it at home then just take the sample there. He will have to keep the cup close to his body. It is important it stays body temperature and it doesn't get too cold or hot. If you don't live close to the doctor they often will have a room available for your husband.

Once they have all the tests results for you and your husband they will go over everything with you and will tell you what they think you should do.

Don't be nervous. This is a good thing that you are going to a specialist. It will provide you with some answers and a plan that will give you the best possible chance of having a baby.

I wish you the best of luck.

Your first appointment will probably be a lot of questions, about family history, medical history etc. Both you and your husband need to be 100% honest with the doctor so that you can work together.
It is easier for the male to be tested... so that is usually the first set of tests that they run. You will not have to "help" him. Usually he can provide the sample at home, but it needs to be delivered to the lab within an hour.
As for testing you, you may have ultrasounds on your uterus and ovaries, blood tests for hormones and various nuclear medicine tests.
I know you're stressing out, but you're doing what you need to do to become a mom... good luck to you!

When we went they did a sperm count and mobility test on hubby no you don't have to help him. As for me they did a vaginal ultra sound followed by some blood work. From there they will let you know whats up and if any plan of action is needed. If you would like there are a couple of groups here that deal with these issues one is ttchappybabydusttoall and the other group I know of is oasis-l they give info and support. Hopes this helped.
