Males with cystic fibrosis are infertile but how and why
Cystic fibrosis is a problem with the mucus being much too thick. It affects the lungs in that the normal respiratory epithelium cannot clear the airways, and the mucus houses bacteria that cause infection. It affects the pancreas, since the mucus in the pancreatic fluid is too thick to make its way to the normal digestive system. It affects fertility in males because one of the components of semen is mucus, and if it is too thick to make it's way through the tubules, it cannot reach its intended target.
