Can dogs suffer with irritable bowel syndrome if so what can we do to help them?

Wheat is not natural in a dogs diet - most dog food contains wheat. My dog suffered diahorrea once a month until somone suggested this could be a problem.

The following dog foods are wheat free:
Burns
James Well Beloved
Autarky

I thought that that was what my dog had.........she had diarrhea frequently and would stretch real big and have gas. I found out it is allergies. So we treat it by not giving her the things she is allergic to, and since her allergies are severe she gets shots for them. However many times they just have food allergies.

Dogs actually can get IBS but it is very rare. You should consult your vet and see if that is what your pet possibly has. If it is they will put your dog on meds and will give you a prescription dog food that is very very sensitive on the stomach. If your dog is just having a lot of diarrhea issues then you may one to try Science Diet's over the counter Sensitive Stomach formula...a lot of our clients at the Pet hospital I work at have given us good reviews on the food and said it helped their pets out tremendously. Some pets just have more sensitive digestive systems then others! Good Luck and I hope your pet feels better!

unsure if dogs can suffer this but if your dog has it then then never sit or stand behind him for at least 2 hours after he has eaten unless you know hes already been to the loo

It can be dependent on breed (like German Shephards may be more prone, for example), but it should be diagnosed by a veterinarian...

It can be influenced by diet, but I do want to mention that if an animal has allergies to food (it is more common than you might think!), then it's manifested by skin disease and ear infections more often than by diarrhea...

Generally, anti-inflammatories such as steroids (i.e. prednisone), immune-modulating therapies, and bland diets are most beneficial....

If your animal does have this condition, it is wise to have repeat visits with the vet - steroids and other therapies can have side-effects and I have heard of one study showing this disease progressing to certain cancers...

Feeding a high quality food with no grains (or raw diet) can do wonders for IBS.

Your best bet would be to find a food that has a high fish content because fish is very easy on the stomach and easy to digest.

The Best I can reccomemend is TimberWolf OceanBlue.

Also adding some Probiotics and Enzymes to your dogs diet would help immensely. That would be adding back the helpful bacteria that live in all mammals stomachs and help in digestion.

Do not put your dog on a prescription diet no matter what your vet says. Vets know very little about animal nutrition unfortunately and the foods that prescribe don't fit a dogs nutritional needs and can harm your dog much more than help him/her.

Do some research on nutrition, that will help you decide what is best for your dog.

Good luck!
