What is "Irritable bowel syndrome?"?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or spastic colon, is a functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits which are not associated with any abnormalities seen on routine clinical testing. It is fairly common and makes up 20鈥?0% of visits to gastroenterologists.

The range of symptoms relating to IBS is relatively broad, but the main symptom is usually abdominal pain or discomfort associated with changes in bowel habits in the absence of any apparent structural abnormality. The pain is commonly relieved by defecating or modulated by other triggers of gut motility. There is generally no pain when patients are asleep. Symptoms usually start in young adulthood.

In my own experience with IBS, and several friends of mine, it causes frequent stomach pain, frequent diarrhea and bowel movements in general, and a general bloated feeling.

this is a condition of the digestive tract that can make a person's life miserable if they have it.

common symptoms are cramping,bloating,diarrhea,con... gas

some people have it so badly they can't function in their normal daily lives-they can't work,travel,or go to family functions.

Oh geesh, I am a sufferer of IBS! The bowel gets irritated and it causes cramping, diarhea and sometimes, nausea. Stress seems to be my big trigger but, diet plays another. I cannot eat large portions of meat as it will cause me to cramp. I have to eat a high fiber diet and they gave me a prescription, glycopyrrolate, to slow down the intestines!

Some of the symptoms are: bloating, cramping, gaseous and nausea.

I certainly hope you do not have this as it can be very troublesome from day to day!
