Tips for possible irritable bowel syndrome? wheat/gluten intolerance? |
IBS runs in my family and i hav most likely inherited it. I bloat and break our when i have refined wheat and cereal products. Any tips on adapting to a new lifestyle. iv already started substituing my foods for wheat/gluten free alternatives. Hello. I would strongly suggest (and you may take it or leave it as some don't like to hear this, but I press on hoping to help ppl get diagnosed quicker) that you be blood tested for Celiac Disease if you have the means to do so. IBS is often a misdiagnosis and Celiac is often the correct one. (I have not met a Celiac yet who wasnt misdiagnosed with IBS first.) The good thing is, unlike IBS, it requires no meds and there is hope!! Also since you say IBS runs in your family, it makes me think. Celiac is EXTREMELY hereditary and genetically predisposed. The only solution is a gluten free diet. Simple,e asy and totally doable. You say you break out. If you you cannot or dont want to do the blood test or endoscopy typically done for CD, you can try something else. People who have Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) ALWAYS have CD. In other words, if you have the classic skin rash and see a dermatologist, they can do a smal skin biopsy for DH and see if you have it. If you do, you ABSOLUTELY have CD, no questions asked and you wont need to undergo any further testing. HOWEVER for all skin, gastro biopsies or blood tests you MUST be eating gluten prior to the test. The only reason I endorse testing is it can make your life easier to know for SURE what's wrong. Many ppl with CD go 10-20 years before they are properly diagnosed. My goal is to cut that down significantly as much as I can! Now, that being said, if you cannot or do not want to get tested and feel the gluten free life is for you, here you go! Here are some great sites, instead of me copying it all, you can surf as you please!! www.celiac.com www.celiac.org www.csaceliacs.org www.celiaccentral.org www.glutenfree.com www.glutensolutions.com www.glutenfreemall.com Some great books: Celiac Disease A Hidden Epidemic by Dr Peter Green Living Wheat and Gluten Free for DUmmies by Danna Korn. Gluten Free Living--a magazine, go to www.glutenfreeliving.com Yahoo Health Groups: SillyYaks USA_SillyYaks celiac_disease foodallergynetwork Let me know if I can be of any further help!! Amy Source(s): I run a CD Support group I hear about this painful problem, but i believe we can eat anything we want in small amounts. I love milk and lactose intolerant, but I will eat a little icecream if it is just a few spoonfull. I will eat a wheat sandwich and an open face sandwich is great. Eat high enzyme fruit like papaya and mango. dont use excuses that you cant find them because I live in Alaska and spend more to eat those fruits because to me they are medicine to the tum tum also acidodophulus is great I may have misspelled it , but it works. See the health food store Don't eat wheat. Rye bread, or spelt are better alternatives. Read the labels on any canned food you eat. Glutenfreegirl is right. A lot of us with celiac disease, myself included, often are initially diagnosed with IBS. A simple blood test is now available to tell if you have celiac disease. |
