Are there any prescribed medicines for controlling Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

What IBS means: ----- Irritable bowel syndrome is understood as a multi-faceted disorder. In people with IBS, symptoms result from what appears to be a disturbance in the interaction between the gut or intestines, the brain, and the autonomic nervous system that alters regulation of bowel motility (motor function) or sensory function.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a group of symptoms in which abdominal pain or discomfort is associated with a change in bowel pattern, such as loose or more frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, and/or constipation.

People with IBS either have IBS with constipation or IBS with diarrhea. With constipation - try Zelnorm.

For diarrhea - if you're a younger female and have had this for a while, talk to your doctor about Lotronex. it's not on the market but it's extremely effective.
check out this site...they mention a couple of different meds and treatments.

right now only one called zelnorm. it has to be prescribed by a doctor and is only good for constipation. i have it and i control mine with an antidpressant because ibs is caused by stress mostly. I find it to help me a lot.
There are several prescription medications available in the US for IBS. One of the newest is Zelnorm which helps to regulate the muscular movements in the colon. Other medications are used to treat the symptoms of IBS, diarrhea vs constipation vs both.
First of all make sure that you really do have IBS. There are numerous other diseases that can masquerade as IBS such as endometriosis, crohn's, ulcerative colitis, gallbladder disease etc. You really need to see a gastroenterologist for a good diagnosis.
There is a writer named Heather Van Vorous who has written several books of eating for IBS. Her book, IBS the 1st year is wonderful for learning more about IBS, conventional and alternative treatment options and coping strategies. I recommend this book to my newly diagnosed patients.
Good luck!
I've always used fiber every day, been doing it for 25 years.***
