Irritable bowel syndrome an dati depressants.? |
i heard antidepressant with a certain chemical in it can help IBS, is that true. what is the chemical called? A specific and older, seldom used group of antidepressants, called tricyclics, often help IBS. The best example is probably amitriptylline. The dose used is much smaller than the antidepressant dose, often 10-20mgs at night is all that is needed. ( the antidepressant dose was 75-150mgs). The effect is probably due to the drug acting as a smooth muscle relaxant. Source(s): GP for more years than i care to remember i have it and take codein phosphate its sort of an upper you can get addicted so beware. i've heard that too. i doubt its the SSRi itself that helps, its just that alot of times flares of IBS/UC/Chrone's are instigated by stress. you get something to take the edge off, justa little, you can avoid flares and steroids. my doc put me on xanax for just that reason when my father was dying ( tho i have a slight history of anxiety). some antis will help with appetite too, which helps you regain the weight you lose with bowel disorders i know what u mean. a few years ago i was on an anti depressant called Dothiapin, and it helped me loads with my IBS... it had a chemical in it that slowed down the digestive process... (my doctor actually mentioned this to me) one of the side effects of that particular anti depressant was supposed to be constipation, but i found that it nicely balanced things out for me. sadly, not all anti depressants react the same way. before i was on Dothiepin, i was on efexor, which made my IBS loads worse. i've had a quick look online, and couldn't find the exact chemical found in some anti depressants that can help IBS... maybe you could ask your chemist or doctor ? I have irritable bowel and take Levbid for the cramping. I found an over the counter medication called Digestive Advantage for IBS that has really helped me. It is a chewable and you just take one a day. It has helped relieve the bloating and discomfort and has lessened the diarrhea. You might want to try it. You have nothing to lose, and the quality of your life will improve. Good luck. The private hospital below has all the latest treatment options for ibs. |
