Can liposuction be used to reduce weight to get into the guard or military?

I have a friend that is talking seriously about getting liposuction done to help him lose part of the 90 lbs he needs to lose to get into the military.
Obviously its not authorized or suggested, I think he's planning to not tell them.

Ideas? Is he right -will it work?

What are the moral implications?

liposuction is for spot reduction only and reshapes the way your body looks. your friend wont lose any significant amount of weight through liposuction.

Who says lipo is not authorized? Just as long as he's recovered and medically cleared, And he has the paper work from the doctor to prove it. There shouldnt be a problem. Its not against the military to get lipo. But i wouldnt suggest not telling them. Theres no reason not to. Besides what happens if (knock on wood) something happens in the future thats related to the surgery medically, then he's caught. Then hes in trouble for lying to the military in the first place. I wouldnt suggest it.
Besides if he's got the money why not?
Okay- that regulation is from the army. The only way to really check is to just call the recruiter from the service that he wants to join. And double check with them. you dont have to give them any info. Its just a yes or no question.

It is his choice. However, the MEPS doc will need the surgery report and to have let the procedure heal and all follow up done prior to looking at him. Best bet - do push aways, eat less and exercise more. Losing the weight should be lifestyle change for life, not just a reduction for entry. 90 lbs is a lot and the surgeon may be reluctant to take that much out. He is right it works, not to this extent. Here is a reasonable diet and exercise program to get ready for the rigors of Basic Training and lose weight. Cheaper too.

I think if he is really overweight, maybe, I had a puch from my two kids and looked like I was three months pregnant...still. The army ran me six miles almost every day and then I stood all day in a motorpool, I was tired, but i still had the weight and I did remedial PT (pT twice a day) or ran on my own. I adventually got lipo and they cut off the excess fat (abdominal plasty) and it cost me 8 thousand dollars. I think if th efat os very stubborn and will not go away, then maybe, but I would wait until after being at a unit for a while, people tend to loose weight in basic and AIT and more when they get to their unit, because they run more miles then they did at basic and AIT. If they are continually get weighed for body fat after a PT test, then yea, the weight will be a problem and if diet and exercise has not worked, OK.

I haven't read the AR; I'll try to pull it up tomorrow. What if you get lipo on your butt?

They do lipo in military hospitals...I don't know why you think its not authorized? Did some one tell you that?

What are the moral implications of going to WW?

A history of any gastrointestinal procedure for the control or correction of obesity is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. The source below is the medical standard. Liposuction is considered to be in that category.

I guess its an option, an expensive option...but they are concerned with the weight you are when you go in for your physical. There are cheaper ways of losing weight.
