How successful is liposuction?

I am planning to trim myself. I have stubborn fats in my abdomen that refuse to budge an inch. Is liposuction safe? People have advised me that if lipo is carried in a person the fat which is in the process of getting sucked out sometime gets into the blood stream and clots the heart which leads to heart attack. How far is this true? Secondly should liposuction always be coupled with tummy tuck? Will a person be able to get flat tummy with liposuction devoid of tummy tuck?

Hi - I had a tummy tuck and hip liposuction done back in July, so I can share my knowledge with you.

If you are looking to flatten your stomach, go for the tummy tuck. My doctor explained to me that liposuction in the abdominal area is not really effective without the tummy tuck. Liposuction is more for "smaller" areas like your inner thighs or even your arms. I had the liposuction done with the tummy tuck to help "contour" my new abdomen better.

But, a tummy tuck is really for people who have access skin due to a loss of elasticity in the abdomen skin (like me....who had a twin pregnancy....got VERY OVER-STRETCHED....and my skin was stretched too much to go back to it's "normal" place....kind of like a rubber band that is overstretched and loses it's original form.)

So, I would go to a plastic surgeon and see what they say would help you reach the goals you want. Neither liposuction or a tummy tuck are methods of weight loss....they are meant to help "remold" your body. Maybe they will say that all you need is lipo...maybe they will say you can trim yourself on your own through exercise.

As far as being safe....I think as long as you do it with a qualified doctor in a hospital or surgery center, you are safe. Don't go to some "clinic." Call local hospitals and ask for the names of plastic surgeons who use their facilities to perform these types of operations. (They won't steer you wrong, because they wouldn't let someone use their facility if they could possibly bring a lawsuit against them for poorly performed procedures!) Be very leary of a plastic surgeon who does NOT do this type of surgery in a hospital; this is not something to be done in some private office!

wouldnt do it, because it can make your body disproportional and you can gain all the fat back not to mention more! try a trainer or something or healthy! good luck

Well I think that if you are determined to lose weight you should just diet and excercise. I got a lipo when i was 16 and lost weight. But in about a year I had gained it all back. Now I'm the same weight as I have always been except that I feel ugly since one side of my abdomen is bigger than the other. About the excces skin after my lipo i did have a little bit of skin hanging but it was not that bad and if i would have excercised a bit i could have gotter rid of it. In case you are wondering before the lipo I weighed about 200lbs and after I weighed like 160. You could really tell the difference though. Now I'm 21 and weigh 190lbs. If I wanted to lose weight in my opinion I would just start dieting and excercising so I hoped I helped any. -Josie
