CT scan question about Lung cancer?

I am suffering from shortness of breath, really bad that is, so I went to ER( 2 times last week) as it was so bad, I am 29M btw, well They did the x-ray and other test and they sent me home with no answer on both occasions( I was told there is nothing wrong), well I went to my MD to see what he has to say, he ordered 3 heart related test first to see if I have that problem, and they were negative except for raised BP( 131/78) , then PFT/CT scan, they were also normal with no abnormalities.
I was wondering if there still can be any lung problems? I have family history of Lung cancer, I was wondering if its cancer related something must have shown by now? and One imp question, My search suggest that early cancer DOES NOT cause symptoms, so If I DO have cancer( in cells for say ), do you think it will cause that much breathing problem?

Dr. Patrick, the chiropracter, who is all over Yahoo Answers shamelessly giving plugs about his website and company. And then giving "medical advice" jumping from shortness of breath to diabetes/DKA. I would ignore all that if I were you.

It sounds like you've had a pretty extensive workup. If both PFT (looks at your lung physiology and how it performs) and CT scans (looks at your chest anatomy) were normal, as well as your heart tests (you did not list what they were), then at this point...there probably is not anything wrong with your heart/lungs. Remember, shortness of breath, or "dyspnea", is a subjective complaint. There does not have to be an "objective" component, such as a mass blocking your airway. The 2 most common causes of subjective dyspnea are anxiety or problems relating to obesity (ie. your airway closes when you sleep, and you wake up gasping for air).

Side note: Diabetics in DKA will have a physiologic response to their systemic acidosis causing an increase in breathing rate to maintain physiologic pH. This usually does not result in dyspnea, even though they are breathing at a rapid rate. You sound like an anxious person, please do not worry about diabetes at this point. I also would not worry about lung cancer. If you are smoking though, it's time to quit.

You are right that early cancers usually do not produce any symptoms at all. If your lung x-rays were clear, chances are they will not find anything on a CAT scan either. On the other hand, there are metabolic conditions that can cause shortness of breath, and this has nothing at all to do with the lungs. One of them is ketoacidosis. Might you be diabetic? Also, you may be interested in the link below. Hope it all works out well for you.

First, I think that it will be O.K. if you get rid of the fear that you have for getting cancer. Contray to what you have been hearing, only about 8% of cancers are genetically linked. These are usually cancers that occur in younger patients, such as sarcoma or early-onset colon cancer. The vast majority of occur without a known cause or are related to lifestyle changes. However, you did show an elevated blood pressure reading. I do not want you to get so focused on this cancer and neglect the rest of your health.

Focus blinds you: you cannot see north because you are looking south. Therefore, you should concider all of the possible causes of breathlessness (dyspnea). And not all of them are disease related such as running, heavy exercise, fear, excitment, sexual intercourse, mountain climbing, remaining at high altitude, and excessive smoking. There are, however, disease related conditions that causes breathlessness.

These conditions are or uremia and acute kidney failure, but other symptoms in these kidney disorders are more expressive. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) dificiency can cause shortness of breath as well as cancer of the pharynx.

These are condition with shortness of breathe as the primary symptom. However, if you notice any other symptom e.g. a cough, a fever, of fatigue please notify your doctor. He or She can become open to the long list of other possibe causes of shortness of breath, for example Asthma.

Hope this answers your question!
