My best friend died last year of lung cancer and I'm confused about our common (Catholic) faith. Please help!? |
My best friend of 38 years passed last thanksgiving after a battle with inoperable lung cancer. Although he was a gay man, he had a mass of Christian burial in the catholic church. I thought the church frowned upon such things, although I always accepted him the way he was, as a fellow human and a good friend. This has been puzzling me for quite some time now. Can anyone explain this to me? His partner was even named first in the service before his parents. I thought it was nice that there was acceptance but I thought the Catholic church frowned upon his lifestyle. Homosexual activity is sometimes looked down upon by the church, but that doesn't mean they can't accept him. I think the act of homosexuality is looked down upon, not the person, bible teaches you to love the sinner and hate the sin, hating the homosexual isn't going to do anything for church or a person. I'm christian, I have a friend who's a lesbian, I don't condemn her, but she is aware of how I feel about the issue and it's her decision. I think it is a decision that she will have to be accountable to The Catholic Church also says that any sex outside of marriage and birth control is wrong but do they seriously think all who do these things go to hell or shouldn't have Catholic funerals? Of course not. Almost no would could call themselves Catholic if they wanted to be that hardass about everything. Isn't that why you go to church, confession, do penances, etc, because nobody is perfect? The Catholic Church teaches that same sex relationships are wrong since they believe that homosexuality is learned not genetic. When you friend die, he did not die as a non Catholic since he was baptized. He was buried within the Church because he most likely received the sacrament of the sick which includes a general absolution for all his sins including his same sex relationships, its funny they can frown upon gay/lesbian lifestyle, but yet they have probably molested more young boys than anyone. the last time i checked it wasn't illegal to be gay, but it was to be a molester we don't hate the sinner we hate the sin |
