OF CURRENT TOBBACO SMOKERS... How many of them will develope lung cancer? is it the majority of them? |
I cant find anything but statistics like "90% of lung cancer is caused by smoking" I don't wanna know what percentage of lung caner is caused by smoking. I wanna know what percentage of life long smokers develope lung cancer... No, it is not a majority - it is a minority of chronic smokers who go on to develop lung cancer. Here's info from a Canadian study that asked this same question: Your best bet is to check with your local cancer society. My friend is in the process of doing research after her own experience with the disease (does work in the medical field) after losing her own mother to this horrible disease on a similar topic. However, hers has a twist - how the age you begin smoking affects your life expectancy! She has noticed since her mom got sick that many people who began smoking in their early teens, die in their mid 50s. Her theory is that when one begins smoking during those crucial years, the toxins are more readily absorbed as your body is still growing. Many people who are smokers in their 90s seem to defy the odds but the vast majority did not start until well into their 20's. It will be interesting to see what the stats are but it is something I too have noticed. It's not exactly the answer you were looking for but hopefully will give you something to think about!! I don't know the exact percent but I know it is the majority. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the US and this is from smoking so if you think about it the majority do. Or at least have to be on oxygen when they are older, believe me I have seen plenty. |
