Do smokers in China really have a lower rate of lung cancer than smokers in the U.S.?

Be wary of statistics from this part of world. You may remember there was a big thing about using acupuncture for operations - several year later this was proved to be a fraud.

China is a massive country. It does not have the same medical infrastructure as we have in the west; you only have to try and Google hospital information in China to realise that it is very sparse to understand that gathering information about rates of lung cancer is fraught with problems.

Look at the data very carefully. Smokers in China currently have a lower recorded death rate than elsewhere, but the same rates of lung cancer....How could this be? They have not yet been smoking as much for as long as the people in the populations you have to compare the data with (Americans & Europeans). The rate of lung cancer deaths is rapidly rising in China, and will no doubt shortly match the rate observed everywhere else...
