Did anyone realise its National Lung Cancer awareness month? |
Yes apparently November is the month for lung cancer awareness but doesnt seem to be widely publicised. This is the taboo cancer that people often think is self inflicted. There are cancer sufferers who have never smoked in their lives and the ones that have....well shall we say we all suffer with the 'it wont happen to me' syndrome. People struggle to give up the habit for a number of reasons and stress factors in their lives and its one of the top cancers for mortality as it is rarely diagnosed early enough, the symptoms are sketchy and we all get coughs from time to time that we assume innocent. Please see Roycastlefoundation website, some interesting info. I took a look, and noticed on the kids section the following, which said that passive smoking caused: "Increased risk of coronary heart disease. A 10-30% increased risk of lung cancer for non-smokers who are exposed to passive smoking over long periods of time." This is complete nonsense. There is no scientifically verifiable evidence linking passive smoking with either coronary heart disease or lung cancer: on the contrary, the largest study ever conducted with a sample of over 35,000 non-smoking spouses of smokers, by scientists from the Universities of Califonia and New York, found that there was no statistical evidence ot suggest these non-smokers (in a study which ran from 1959 to 1998) suffered greater mortality rates than non-smokers generally from either coronary heart disease or lung cancer at any time or any level of exposure. Since when did the Roy Castle Foundation engage in blatantly misleading, scaremongering propaganda? No,I am not and thanks for the info. oh no i didnt thank you hun xxxx No I did not know that, but thanks for the info! No I will light a smoke in celebration Yes, I know, my father is suffering from lung cancer and is currently having radiotherapy - he was a smoker for many years but gave it up 20 years ago, just shows it can get you in the end. |
