My mother has throat cancer and my father passed away of small cell lung cancer. Should I be screened? You are only predisposed to certain cancers if you carry certain genes. None of these genes are present in lung cancer. Both cancers that your parents died from are from smoking. Gene testing is available but at this time it only tests for GI tract, breast, ovary, uterine, prostate, pancreas, and a few other rare cancers. If your parent tests positive for the gene you have a 50% chance of having the gene. Only about 5-10% of all cancers have an inherited risk. The main thing obtained from testing is to be extra cautious in early detection plans. Hope this helps calm your fears. You should see your doctor for regular check ups. Share your concerns with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you the best advice. It depends on what caused their cancers. It does, unfortunately, appear you may have a predisposition. This means something in your genetics may cause you to be more susceptible to cancer. It is best to keep a closer eye on your health, especially it seems for you your respiratory system. Mention your parents to your primary care physician so that they can take that into consideration when treating you. This does not, of course, mean you will get cancer, just that you have a higher risk. You should just be aware of this when evaluating symptoms. With family history, I would say yes you should...if you have a potential for it, you need to be trained to prevent it from hurting you. I definitely would find out and get tested... Tip: Research Essiac Tea...its a cancer therapy tea it might help my two friends take that tea every morning. It might help. Its holistic, ask your dr first. yes tell your dr yes and tell your doctor about your family history of cancer. |
