How is the DNA damaged when one has lung cancer?

How is the DNA damaged when one has lung cancer?

actually, if you get lung cancer from smoking or other hardcore drugs, these lead to DNA mutations which in turn cause the cancer...but once you have the cancer it doesn't affect the DNA except for the fact that it is killing the cells
It doesn't affect the dna because the dna is in your cells/ chromosomes?
The DNA remain unaffected even if one has cancer.
