Smoking increases your risk to have cancer, but does not necessarily mean you will have lung cancer. Genetic predisposition is one factor that can lead you to have any type of cancer, u can smoke for 5 or 10 or 15 years but it does not guarantee that you will have lung cancer, chances are , you will have different type of cancer, like mouth, tongue, throat, etc. You can even have lung cancer even if you are not smoking or exposed to 2nd hand smoke.
You can get lung cancer at any age. You don't even have to smoke to get lung cancer.
Look at Christopher Reeves wife. She died from lung cancer and never smoked.

Anytime you smoke, drink or do drugs, you are taking a risk. Risks anywhere from obtaining cancer to causing your children to have mental and physical handicaps.
