It depends on which stage the patient is in. If it's the 4th stage of lung cancer, then may god make the decision as it can be as long as few months to few weeks.
Seriously, don't listen to any timelines you hear. Every case is different, every person is different, and if a doctor gives you (or your friend or family member) a timeline, s/he's just giving the best guess with the information s/he has. There are different types of lung cancer, too, and the prognosis is very different for each. No day but today.
