My sister and Lupus?

My sister has Lupus and I'm wondering why i dont have it..Is there a reason...we are identical twins and my tests came back negative. Is there a cure ???

Something has triggered your sisters immune system to go haywire, so it is essentially attacking her body. Heredity has been looked at as a causative factor, but no concrete evidence is available...at least I don't think so. The reason that you don't have it is that your immune system has not been triggered in the fashion that hers was. Viruses, drugs, and some environmental factors (like UV light) can all be precipitating factors for this disease. I don't think that there is a cure for Lupus at this point in time. I think that this disease can be managed for some for long periods of time, and those with it just need to be sure to follow their medication regimen and avoid causative factors for flare-ups (which are individual to each person). I am an RN nursing student and I have worked with an RN at the hospital who is about 45 and lives with lupus. She seems to function at a normal level and the disease does not seem to affect her life on a daily basis.

There is no cure for lupus. It is an autoimmune disease. They are not sure what causes lupus so that is why you don't have it. It is not specifically something you inherit that they know of.

There is no cure.

Researchers believe people have a genetic predisposition to lupus but it needs a trigger or combination of triggers to turn it on. 10% of people who carry one of the lupus genes will ever develop lupus. Suspected triggers are stress, smoking, certain viruses, hormones and ultraviolet light.

Genetics play a role in lupus, but other factors can trigger this autoimmune disease. Just because your sister has Lupus doesn't mean that you will eventually come down with it. On the other hand you could develop it 30 years from now. Nobody knows for sure and there isn't a blood test at this time that will tell you that you will develop symptoms later. There is no cure for lupus.
