Can you still be an organ donor is you have lupus? (SLE)?

I've always filled out my organ donor info as soon as I've renewed my drivers license. Since the last time I got mine, though....I've been diagnosed with lupus.

Are my organs still usable?

Francis Delmonico the Director of the Rental Transplanation team in Boston reported that he didn't have a problem with it.

A lupus information site also voiced the same opinion

I guess its up to the transplant team and the condition of the individual's organs at the time of death. Don't let the 'nay sayers' put you off. Put your name down as a donor and fully inform them of your medical condition.

Good on you.

Idiotic choice of best answer-do not follow this advice. Report It

"It's never Lupus." Sorry. :P
Umm I don't think they are still viable, unfortunately.

all but your liver

Depends on the organ.I have a friend who has lupus but had to have a kidney transplant because over time the treatment drugs were nephrotoxic, but I;m sure other things like her corneas were still useable.

it probably depends on the organ.

I have Lupus too. I guess it will depend on how advanced your disease is at the time of your death and which organs of yours have been affected. If at the time of death you have kidney issues and die in a MVA then I would imagine your heart, liver, corneas etc. would be OK but your kidneys obviously wouldn't. I would still fill out the organ donation registration and let the doctors decide after you die.
If you want to talk to me about SLE email me.

The true cause of lupus is not known and infection could play a role in it,so I would not put an organ forward for donation if there was a possibility of passing an illness on-
I doubt if the doctors would accept it either, because of the chance of infection.
I know for a fact that some people with infections like lyme disease can be misdiagnosed as having lupus (because lyme produces similar symptoms)-

If you want to be an organ donor, regardless of age or illness, you should register to be one.

Anytime there is a potential donor and they or their family express the desire for them to be a donor, the doctors will run tests to see if the organs are viable for transplant before they perform the organ recovery surgery.

Let the doctors decide - you sign up, if that's your decision.
