Is lupus cureable?

I was wondering if the disease lupus was curable?

No at present there is no cure for Lupus, it's usually managed by prescribed medicine and monitored with regular blood tests and visits to a Rheumatologist. Please read the link below, it gives abit of information, on where to go for Lupus organizations and Forums. Specialized Hospitals. Reading Books etc

Take Care and Good Luck

No. It it treatable, but not curable. Autoimmune diseases are not curable.

At this point it is not.

The only option available to POSSIBLY "cure" it is to have a bone marrow transplant. It is considered experimental by most insurance companies (so they won't pay for it), it is a very risky procedure (the recipient could die since they have to completely destroy the immune system - making them EXTREMELY susceptible to infection), and even then, there is no guarantee that it will work.

The point is to in essence, "re-boot" the immune system, but sometimes it doesn't work. And that is a huge risk and expensive risk to take.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease. It means the body can no longer distinguish between a foreign object and the body. It assumes everything is foreign and begins to attack everything. Hence it is a chronic inflammatory disease. It attacks all tissues, organs, everything.

It is treatable though. There are many prescriptions out there that can treat the disease and make it manageable so someone with it can live a fairly normal and long life. There are also ways to change the diet to help the body better (ex: avoiding caffiene, alcohol, eating foods rich in Omega fatty acids, foods with anti-inflammatory properties, foods rich in anti-oxidants).

Many years ago (mainly back in the 60's and prior) if one was diagnosed with lupus, it was almost a death sentence, but now, it is so manageable, it isn't too bad.

Sadly, no. My cousin passed away from this. She was under intensive treatment and in the end, she lost her battle.

At the present time there is not a cure for lupus, but there certainly is effective treatment. The majority of symptoms of lupus are due to inflammation and so the treatment is aimed at reducing that inflammation.

As stated above, Lupus is managable with medications and lifestyle changes. Bone marrow transplants have absolutely nothing to do with the treatment of Lupus so the person above has no idea what they're talking about. There is no scientific basis to bone marrow transplants. Medications like Cellcept and prednisone can help to keep symptoms in check. It's important to see a rhumetalogist on a regular basis. People can now expect to live a relatively normal life with Lupus more than ever before.
