Can lupus prevent pregnancy?

Can lupus prevent pregnancy?

Hi, lupus is a systemic (and autoiummune) problem that affects all your organs. It is in your best interest to seek advice from a Rheumatologist ONLY regarding your health care.

If you are intending to get pregnant and are a patient or know a patient, it is best to contact an OB/Gyn that specializes in high-risk pregnancies and has had patients w/lupus before.

As with all chronic diseases, there are many risks involoved. Timing, whether or not it is even advised, whether or not a pregnancy can cause a flare, etc. There are many factors to consider.

Preventing pregancy, carrying to term safely, and the safety of the mother all needs to be considered and weighed by the specialist and patient. Preventing pregnancy is not really the issue with lupus- though miscarriages are a reality with anyone with or without lupus.

Please talk to a doctor so you can have the correct medical advise and make the best informed decision.

Basically, if you have SLE and are trying to get pregnant, please seek out good medical advice right now. BEFORE YOU GET PREGNANT. Know your situation thoroughly.

If you haven't gotten pregnant, are trying and are disappointed - please know that many lupus patients have been pregnant but have had their ups and downs with pregnancies.

Good luck and bless you!

Good luck.

yes . SLE or systemic Lupus erythematousus can prevent pregnancy as will increase the incidence of abortion.

The answer above mine is a great one. You need to check with your doctor regarding your specific symptoms and how SLE is affecting your body. As far as the first answer. Lupus is not a cause for spontaneous abortion. In fact, patients with SLE have no higher incidence of spontaneous abortion than the general public. This is a common misconception. Actually, what people are referring to when they say that Lupus causes a higher incidence of abortion is a disease that 'piggybacks' with Lupus called Anti Phospholipid Syndrome or APS. About 50% of SLE patients have this disease but only about 25% of them are actually tested for it...a simple blood test. APS definately increases the chance for spontaneous abortion and also carries with it a higher risk for stroke while pregnant. It is very important that if you decide to become pregnant while your Lupus is in remission that you check for APS. It would be unwise for you to attempt to get pregnant with this disease.
