Unfortunately there really aren't many alternatives to prednisone thearpy. Your doctor should be trying to taper you off of prednisone as soon as he/she can. The long term side effects can be severe. Hopefully, you're only using it to treat flare ups and not for maintanence of your Lupus. Some doctors, who aren't current in their Lupus education, still use prednisone for long term treatment. There are many better ways to actually treat your over active immune system. The most recent being Cellcept (Myfortic is it's time released cousin). This medication was initially used for organ transplant patients but has worked wonders with Lupus patients. Other medications used are Cytoxan, a chemothearpy med with some serious side effects and then Rituxan, a much newer therapy, also a chemotherapy agent, with much fewer side effects.
