Will you get a butterfly rash with systemic lupus, or just discoid lupus? You can get the butterfly rash of lupus with either form. It is causes by inflammation (vasculitis) in the very tiny blood vessels in the skin. You CAN get a "butterfly" rash over the cheeks and bridge of the nose affects about half of those with SLE. The rash gets worse when in sunlight. The rash may also be widespread. You can get a butterfly rash with systemic lupus. But, you can have systemic lupus and not get the rash. I have SLE and do not get the classic butterfly rash. The typical "butterfly" rash is associated only with SLE. That isn't to say that those with Discoid Lupus also don't have facial rashes, in fact they do. However, when specifically mentioning a butterfly rash it is only when talking about SLE. |
