How do you recognise a lupus rash? I know butterfly pattern but more detail please? |
Is it dry? raised? fine dots? Does it react to creams etc? Although it only affects about one in three people with lupus, the skin problem most often associated with the disease is a butterfly-shaped rash (malar rash) that develops across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. A malar rash may be flat or raised and may be blotchy or completely red in the affected areas. Some people with lupus develop skin lesions (subacute cutaneous lesions) that initially resemble small pimples but that eventually turn scaly and itchy, whereas others have large, flat, itchy lesions with clear centers. Both types of lesions usually appear after exposure to sunlight. Still other people develop a crusty, red, raised rash (discoid rash) on the face, neck, chest or scalp. A discoid rash is usually thick and scaly, may last for days or years, and often leaves hypopigmented or hyperpigmented scars. This rash is the only symptom in people with the discoid form of lupus. In a small percentage of cases, people with discoid lupus may go on to develop a mild version of SLE. Source(s): mayoclinic.com Joint/muscle aches and pains Permanent rash over cheeks Extreme fatigue and weakness Increased risk of miscarriage Rashes from sunlight/UV light Flu-like symptoms and/or night sweats Weight gain or loss Inflammation of the tissues covering internal organs with associated chest and/or abdominal pain Seizures, mental illness or other cerebral problems Headaches, migraine Kidney problems Oral/nasal ulcers Hair loss Depression Haematological disorders including anaemia Swollen glands Poor blood circulation causing the tips of fingers and toes to turn white then blue on exposure to cold (Raynauds) A person with lupus may have four or five symptoms, where some of these might recede and/or others develop. THE TWO MAJOR SYMPTOMS OF LUPUS APPEAR TO BE: JOINT/MUSCLE ACHES AND PAINS EXTREME FATIGUE AND WEAKNESS The rash can be different from person to person, but the main symptoms of the malar rash or butterfly rash are: Butterfly-shaped red rash that extends over the bridge of the nose and the cheeks. The rash may be flat or raised. The malar rash often appears or gets worse after sun exposure or stress that causes an increase in the circulation to the skin. There is also Discoid Lupus or DLE which is a type of Lupus in itself. This effects the skin in patients. The symptoms are: Lesion is usually raised or flat, red, with well-defined borders, and it may itch. It is often scarring, and in larger lesions (smaller lesions grow together to make these) can be very disfiguring. Sun-exposed areas are most often affected: the face, the ears, the scalp, the 'V' of the neck, and the top-side of the forearm. Discoid lupus can appear similar to other skin lesions, e.g. rosacea, fungal infections, sarcoidosis, seborrhea, dermatomyositis. Furthermore if you think you have Lupus, you need to see a doctor, and ask to be tested. Not everyone has the skin problems, and joint aches and pains. My husband was diagnosed two years ago with severe kidney & blood involovement. Until then he had no signs or symptoms. He now has some problems with his skin, but that is due to the drugs he is on to control his Lupus, he still has no jpint aches and pains, but does have severe fatigue. Hope this helps you. Personal experience and our own site www.lupusaustralia.org Lupus ( SLE) is a complex and often a hard to diagnose disease. It's also very uncommon. The butterfly rash is only present in a minority of people who have the disease. What's more important is not the type of rash present but seeing someone who is able to diagnose the condition and gining you the corrent treatment. It cannot be diagnosed from the rash alone andd there are a number of conditions which will give rashes which look very similar to SLE . professional knowledge |
